EXTRACT TWO. (That first morning in the tiny caravan beside the stream.) Jan awoke sometime before 6 am, unable initially to understand where she was or the cause of her awakening. She lay several moments before realising Stephen had fallen on the floor again, and that everyone else in the caravan was awake as well! "Damn!" she silently cursed in annoyance. "The blanket wrapped around them must have worked loose. I wanted to dress while everyone slept!" The thin little curtains, though still drawn, did little to prevent light entering, and in any case it streamed through the roof-light. There was, she realised, no privacy whatsoever, no way to strip off her night-dress and slip into clothes without four pairs of eyes following every movement. Anyway she wanted to wash, and the washing water lay outside in a pail! |

Had that bucket been filled the evening before? She couldn't remember. If not, a trip
across open ground to the river to replenish it was unavoidable. Another thought struck
her. The toilet was out there too! Although early, it must already be full daylight
outside! "Life in the raw," she pondered, "but what did I expect?" -Extract ends-
